From tragedy to hope: Oksana’s story
It began like any ordinary morning for Oksana in her town in central Ukraine. Children rushing off to school, parents heading to work. Life’s simple routines filled the home with warmth.
But in an instant, everything changed. As a Russian missile struck their house, darkness fell over Oksana’s world.
That day, she suffered devastating injuries to her face, losing her eye. But the war took far more: her husband and her 10-year-old son. In one horrific moment, Oksana lost her home, her health, and the most precious treasures of all — her family. And yet, her strength is nothing short of remarkable. Despite unimaginable grief, she was determined to rebuild her life for the sake of her young daughter.

Surgery has given Oksana more than medical care — it has given her hope. The Canada Ukraine Surgical Aid Program (CUSAP) team will never forget the moment Oksana smiled for the first time after seeing her reflection.
That smile was a light against the darkness, a testament to courage, resilience, and the healing power of compassion.
