Winter medical crisis in Ukraine

Your help needed now

Ukraine faces a devastating new humanitarian crisis that demands our immediate attention. Recent Russian missile strikes have deliberately targeted and destroyed three major pharmaceutical warehouses in Kharkiv and Dnipro, wiping out tens of millions of dollars worth of critical medical supplies. These attacks weren’t just against buildings—they were calculated strikes against Ukraine’s healthcare system, leaving 257 frontline hospitals without essential medications just as winter sets in.

According to our partner AICM Ukraine (the Association Internationale de Coopération Médicale in Ukraine), it will take 12 to 20 weeks to replenish these vital stocks, creating a life-threatening gap during the coldest months when medical needs peak.

The Canada-Ukraine Foundation has worked closely with AICM Ukraine throughout this war, and we have immediately mobilized and are responding swiftly to this emergency thanks to the CUF-UCC Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal.

AICM Ukraine is already coordinating international suppliers to secure urgent shipments of basic hospital necessities—disinfectants, IV fluids, pain relievers, anesthetics, and antibiotics. Last week alone, they delivered 25 tons of medication to 17 hospitals in the Sumy region along the Russian border, where daily bombardments continue. These hospitals serve both civilian casualties and wounded defenders, and without immediate resupply, they cannot function through the winter months ahead.

We have rapidly directed emergency funds to help AICM Ukraine address this crisis, but the scale of destruction requires broader support from Canadians. We’re committed to ensuring that frontline medical workers have the supplies they need to save lives, even as Russia attempts to cripple Ukraine’s healthcare infrastructure. Every contribution helps us purchase and deliver critical medicines directly to hospitals under fire, where doctors and nurses work tirelessly despite impossible conditions.

This holiday season, we invite you to support the CUF-UCC Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal to show how “A Little Holiday Magic Can Go a Long Way”.

By donating by January 12, your donation will be matched by the Myhal Family Foundation and will bring life-saving medicines to Ukrainian hospitals facing their most challenging winter. Together, we can transform the spirit of giving into real, tangible hope for those who need it most.

Every moment counts—help us deliver this critical aid before winter’s full force arrives.

Share a moment of hope this holiday season

Your trust helps Ukrainian families weather the hardest winter months

This time of year reminds us that hope often begins quietly, with one thoughtful act. In her holiday message, Ann Semotiuk, a member of our Board and Chair of our Governance Committee, reflects on how deeply we value the trust placed in us by Canadians, including the Ukrainian Canadian diaspora, whose generosity and compassion guide our work. We are equally grateful to the people of Ukraine, whose courage and resilience inspire us every day.

Watch Ann’s holiday message:

When you give to the Canada-Ukraine Foundation, your kindness becomes something tangible for families enduring winter in unimaginable circumstances in Ukraine. A single donation can help keep a clinic open during a blackout, bring warmth and light to a cold home, or offer comfort to a parent doing everything they can to protect their child.

Your generosity shines far beyond where it starts. This holiday season, we invite you to help carry that hope a little farther. And thanks to the Myhal Family Foundation, donations to our Holiday Campaign supporting the CUF-UCC Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal will be matched dollar for dollar, up to $1,000,000, doubling your impact for Ukraine this winter.

Human Rights, Our Everyday Essentials

December 10 is UN Human Rights Day, a moment to reaffirm the fundamental rights and freedoms that belong to every person. This year’s theme, Human Rights, Our Everyday Essentials, reminds us that these rights are not abstract concepts—they are the foundations we rely on each day to live with dignity, safety, and hope.

For Ukrainians, such “everyday essentials” are being stripped away by Russia through relentless attacks on civilians, the targeted destruction of homes, schools, hospitals and critical energy infrastructure, the displacement of families and entire communities, and the abduction and illegal transfer of children.

The Canada-Ukraine Foundation’s human and civil rights initiatives support and promote civil society organizations in Ukraine that work to strengthen democratic governance, transparency, and accountability, while documenting Russia’s crimes against humanity in Ukraine.

The Canada-Ukraine Foundation engages with organizations that promote human rights advocacy, build policy influence capacity, and address critical humanitarian issues. This includes the rescue and rehabilitation of abducted and forcibly relocated Ukrainian children thanks to our partner Save Ukraine, providing vital support to the youngest victims of the war.

Funding empowers local activists and NGOs to implement just, inclusive policies, while building sustainable advocacy networks.

Our efforts help strengthen Ukraine’s civil society infrastructure and advance fundamental human rights protections for all Ukrainians, particularly vulnerable and at-risk populations.

Human rights are the essentials we rely on every day and are vital to daily life. Together, let’s make human rights a reality for Ukrainians, every day.

Myhal Family Foundation Pledges $1 Million Matching Gift

The Canada-Ukraine Foundation recently launched its 2025 Holiday Campaign A Little Holiday Magic Goes A Long Way  to provide critical relief this winter to those affected by Russia’s ongoing missile attacks . Through the CUF-UCC Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal (UHA), a joint initiative with the Ukrainian Canadian Congress, donations deliver necessities such as hospital generators, heating equipment, food, hygiene kits, and safe shelters for families enduring Ukraine’s harsh winter.

Amplified by a transformational pledge from the Myhal Family Foundation, all donations made between December 9, 2025 and January 12, 2026 will be doubled, up to $1,000,000, bringing even more urgent relief to Ukrainians. With this generous match, the 2025 Holiday Campaign offers Canadian families and businesses a tangible way to make an immediate impact.

Over the past four years, the generosity of Canadians has provided life-saving support to families and communities across Ukraine,” said Valeriy Kostyuk, Executive Director Canada-Ukraine Foundation. “With the Myhal Family Foundation’s incredible matching gift, every donation will go even further to share some holiday magic and deliver warmth, safety, and hope to those who need it most.”

“The Myhal Family Foundation has a long and meaningful relationship with the Canada-Ukraine Foundation, and we’re proud to strengthen that partnership once again with this $1 million match,” added Rayla Myhal, President and Director of the Myhal Family Foundation“Since Russia’s full-scale invasion, the need for support has never been greater and we hope this initiative inspires others to make their gift count twice and help meet the urgent humanitarian needs in Ukraine this winter.”

The campaign brings light to Ukrainians, both literally and figuratively as they experience their fourth and darkest winter of the conflict. Targeted attacks on the country’s critical electrical infrastructure continue to leave families enduring prolonged power outages, with cold and darkness used in a campaign to undermine Ukraine’s resilience.

A little holiday magic can go a long way. Your generosity brings light to Ukrainians when they need it most.

A little holiday magic will go further this GIVING TUESDAY

Donations matched by Barbara Crook & Dan Greenberg, The Danbe Foundation

This GIVING TUESDAY, your support will go twice as far!

Today your impact and a little holiday magic can go even further: Barbara Crook & Dan Greenberg, The Danbe Foundation will match all donations, up to $50,000. Every dollar you give becomes two dollars of essential humanitarian aid. A donation to the CUF-UCC Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal will bring light—and real, tangible relief—to Ukrainians when and where they need it most.

The need could not be more urgent. On Monday, another Russian missile strike, this time on the city of Dnipro, killed at least four people and injured dozens. These attacks remind us—painfully—that ordinary Ukrainians are still carrying the weight of this brutal war every single day.

This Holiday Season, Your Support Lights Hope in Ukraine

As we prepare to gather with loved ones this holiday season in the warmth and safety of our Canadian homes, families across Ukraine are bracing for another winter under Russia’s relentless attack.

Last week alone, Russian missiles and drones have targeted Kyiv, with attacks deliberately calculated to cause maximum harm to civilians. Apartment buildings have been struck, with debris strewn across yards and cars set ablaze in the streets. At the same time, millions face 10 to 18-hour power outages as Russia targets energy infrastructure in what officials describe as weaponizing winter.

Yet in the face of this darkness, Ukraine’s spirit remains unbreakable.

Despite daily attacks on civilian infrastructure—with October alone seeing 148 civilians killed and 929 injured—Ukrainian communities continue to rebuild, volunteers rush to help their neighbours, and civil society organizations work tirelessly to provide essential services. This remarkable resilience isn’t just inspiring; it’s a testament to the Ukrainian people’s determination to protect their democracy and freedom. But they cannot do it alone.

The Canada-Ukraine Foundation stands ready to continue channelling your compassion into action, delivering critical humanitarian aid to those who need it most. Your donation today will continue to provide essentials such as hygiene kits, food boxes, sleeping bags, and hospital generators, and support families facing their darkest winter yet.

Every dollar you contribute becomes a lifeline for someone enduring the unthinkable.

As Canadians, we have stood with Ukraine since the beginning, and our support matters more than ever. Together, we can ensure that even in the darkest nights of winter, the light of hope continues to shine in Ukraine.

Thank you for your unwavering solidarity and generosity.

Bring light to Ukrainians this holiday season

Campaign runs until January 12

As Canadians ready their homes for the holidays, surrounded by warmth and comfort, millions of Ukrainians are facing their fourth winter under Russia’s full-scale invasion. Cold and darkness have become deliberate tools in a campaign to break Ukraine’s resilience. Systematic attacks are destroying the country’s critical electrical infrastructure, leaving families to endure prolonged power cuts that last most of the day and night.

Four years of communities refusing to give up despite relentless airstrikes. Four years of families doing everything they can to create moments of normalcy for their children.

This holiday season, as you reflect on what you’re grateful for, extend some warmth to those still fighting for their tomorrow. The Canada-Ukraine Foundation launches its 2025 Holiday Campaign today and runs until January 12. A donation through the CUF-UCC Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal (UHA) will bring light to Ukrainians this holiday season and some tangible relief.

But as winter deepens, the needs continue to grow. Your generosity in the past has made a real difference. Thanks to your support, we’ve helped provide emergency power for hospitals, support water systems that function during outages, establish warming centres, distribute heating equipment, and deliver food and essentials.

A little holiday magic truly can go a long way.

Your generosity will deliver immediate relief to those who need it most, showing that even in the darkest winter of war, Canadian compassion can kindle the flame of human dignity and resilience.

Highlights from CUF’s participation at theXXVIII Triennial Congress

November 14-16, 2025

The XXVIII Triennial Congress of Ukrainian Canadians in Toronto brought together leaders and changemakers, and the Canada-Ukraine Foundation (CUF) was honoured to contribute to the conversations shaping Ukraine’s recovery and our community’s future. We are keen to share highlights from an engaging and impactful three days.

How civil society can drive Ukraine’s recovery and future growth

CUF was honoured to sponsor the vital and timely Rebuilding Ukraine panel discussion where we highlighted the critical role of civil society in Ukraine’s recovery. With more than 30 years of experience supporting Ukraine through medical, educational, cultural, and child-centred programs, our Chair, Andrew Maleckyj, shared how CUF’s trusted networks and on-the-ground humanitarian infrastructure continue to deliver impact in real time.

CUF Keynote Report

CUF’s Executive Director, Valeriy Kostyuk, joined Andrew Maleckyj to present a report featuring CUF’s programs and its ongoing commitment to Ukraine’s recovery and resilience. Our role as both an operator and a connector allows us to bridge governments, communities, and partners to ensure today’s aid builds tomorrow’s resilience. A commemorative video tracing 30 years of our organization’s meaningful contributions was premiered.

Organizational Governance

Andrew Maleckyj participated in two panels on organizational governance, sharing an update on the Board’s ongoing review of CUF’s governance structure as we have evolved over 30 years, especially since the 2022 full-scale invasion. This exercise will help ensure our framework reflects the organization we have become and positions us to support Ukraine even more effectively in the years ahead.

Funding Our Community

Valeriy Kostyuk engaged in a workshop discussion to speak about various forms of funding, grants and legacy giving. He shared how over the past three years, CUF has transformed its work to meet the urgent humanitarian demands created by Russia’s full-scale invasion. Our focus has been rapid, targeted emergency relief—even as donations naturally decline.

Grant requests have surged dramatically, so to remain effective and sustainable, CUF is sharpening its strategic priorities, strengthening rigorous grant evaluation, and expanding outreach beyond the Ukrainian Canadian community. This work is powered by a committed team of staff and volunteers, ensuring we can continue delivering impactful support to Ukraine when it is needed most.

Looking Back at the XXVIII Triennial Congress

CUF was grateful for the opportunity to hear from two of our valued partners at the Congress, with whom we collaborated on fundraising campaigns earlier this year.

  • Lieutenant-General (ret’d) The Honourable Roméo A. Dallaire delivered a compelling keynote in which he reflected on the deep psychological impact of war and emphasized the need for comprehensive support for Ukraine’s veterans and their families.
  • CUF also welcomed the chance to connect with Mykola Kuleba, Founder of Save Ukraine, who outlined his organization’s efforts to secure the safe return of Ukrainian children illegally abducted by Russia.

Their reports were a meaningful reminder of the vital work underway and the importance of our continued collaboration.

The Canada-Ukraine Foundation extends its sincere thanks to the Ukrainian Canadian Congress for organizing an outstanding XXVIII Triennial Congress and was proud to support the event as a Silver Sponsor. Gatherings like this are invaluable opportunities to celebrate our community in Canada and beyond, and to align our collective efforts in support of Ukraine in the years ahead.

National Child Day

Honouring Every Child’s Right to a Future

November 20 is National Child Day in Canada. It is a reminder of our shared responsibility to protect the rights of every child. This year’s theme focuses on Article 30 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, which affirms each child’s right to practise their culture, language, and identity.

For Ukrainian children, these rights are under threat. Russia’s invasion has forced thousands from their homes, separated families, and exposed children to profound trauma. CUF’s Every Child Deserves a Future supports programs that help children regain safety, connection, and stability. Through our partnership with Save Ukraine, children are rescued from Russian captivity and provided rehabilitation services to help them heal and reclaim their identity.

Your support funds these rescue operations and essential programs that give Ukrainian children their future back.
