A legacy woven into the national fabric
In Alberta, Ukrainian heritage is not abstract. It lives in prairie churches, community halls, grain farms, and hockey rinks. For more than a century, Ukrainian families helped build towns across the province, shaping Alberta’s identity through their language, traditions, faith, and work ethic.
But this story extends beyond one province. Ukrainians helped shape Canada from coast to coast, strengthening communities from British Columbia, across the Prairies through Ontario and Quebec all the way to Atlantic Canada. Their legacy is woven into the national fabric.
Canadian sportscaster Gord Miller grew up in Alberta surrounded by that history. Though not Ukrainian, he understands how deeply this community’s story is intertwined with Canada’s own. “I’m a human being and I care,” he says. Take a moment to watch his video message.
Alberta’s Ukrainian community helped build a province. Ukrainians helped shape a nation.
As Ukraine defends itself against Russia’s invasion, that shared history carries responsibility. Canadians are supporting humanitarian relief and long-term sustainable recovery through the Canada-Ukraine Foundation.
